Virginia Museum Of History and Culture
CHEERS, VIRGINIA!
Cheers, Virginia! celebrates more than four centuries of brewing, distilling, and fermenting in the Commonwealth, exploring how alcohol has shaped daily life, culture, and innovation in Virginia. From the earliest colonial reliance on beer, cider, and spirits as safer alternatives to drinking water, to George Washington’s distilling efforts, the rise of temperance and Prohibition, and today’s vibrant craft beverage renaissance, the exhibition traces the evolving relationship between Virginians and what fills their glass. Centered on the makers themselves, the exhibition reveals how talent, ingenuity, and enthusiasm have connected alcohol production to the people, places, and identity of the Commonwealth.
The exhibition design is object-rich and visually immersive, using artifacts, large-scale graphics, and layered interpretation to guide visitors through a chronological and thematic journey. Historic bottles, tools, packaging, and drinking vessels are paired with contemporary imagery and stories to highlight innovation, regulation, and cultural change over time. Warm materials, period-inspired graphics, and carefully focused lighting create an inviting atmosphere that evokes taverns, workshops, and modern tasting rooms, while clear interpretive hierarchies support an engaging, accessible visitor experience from early Virginia to the present-day craft scene.
