Maymont’s Stone Barn
Maymont: From 1983 to Today and Educational Environmental Graphics
The renovation of Maymont’s historic stone barn reimagines the 19th-century agricultural structure as both a welcoming gateway and an active learning environment. Preserving the building’s stone walls and heavy timber framing, the project transforms the barn into a dual-purpose space: a visitor center that introduces guests to Maymont’s history, and a flexible classroom that supports school programs and public education. The design bridges past and present, allowing the architecture itself to frame the interpretive experience.
The program is organized into two distinct yet complementary areas. On the classroom side, large-scale, color-coded timeline wall graphic immerses students in Maymont’s history through layered imagery and thematic panels that encourage exploration and discussion. Interactive timeline components and adaptable furnishings allow the space to shift easily between structured lessons and open engagement. On the visitor center exhibit side, bold red interpretive panels and the dramatic display of the iconic swan bed create a focused, object-centered experience that highlights the estate’s Gilded Age legacy. Together, the two environments activate the historic barn with contemporary storytelling while respecting its architectural character.
