WAYFINDING SIGNAGE
Explorers Studio partnered with the Science Museum of Virginia to design a comprehensive interior wayfinding system centered on first-time visitors and discovery. The goal was to help guests confidently move through the museum’s interconnected spaces while clearly highlighting exhibitions and key destinations along the way. Our work addressed complex circulation patterns, clarified pathways, resolved challenging decision points, and elevated the overall guest experience through a cohesive, intuitive signage system. In collaboration with Museum staff, we developed design and production-ready files and supported coordination with a fabricator to shows the vision through implementation.
The resulting wayfinding system balances clarity, hierarchy, and visual cohesion across orientation, directional, identification, and informational signage. A modular family of directories, maps, and directional signs creates a consistent visual language throughout the Museum, using color, typography, and iconography to guide movement, reinforce destinations, and support accessibility. Flexible formats allow the system to adapt as exhibitions and programs evolve.
