Stratford Hall

WAYFINDING SIGNAGE

Stratford Hall, the birthplace of Robert E. Lee and a National Historic Landmark, encompasses a large and complex landscape that includes historic buildings, visitor amenities, gardens, walking paths, and a fossil beach overlooking the Potomac River. Explorers Studio was engaged to design a comprehensive wayfinding signage program to help first-time and returning visitors navigate the site with clarity while respecting the historic character of the property. The project addressed both vehicular and pedestrian circulation, guiding visitors seamlessly from arrival through the grounds and into key destinations.

The wayfinding system was developed to balance legibility, durability, and historical sensitivity. A coordinated family of signs—including vehicular directional, pedestrian directional, identification, regulatory, and interpretive signage—was created to provide consistent visual cues across the site. Materials, proportions, and color palettes were carefully selected to complement Stratford Hall’s architectural and cultural context without competing with it. The result is a clear, intuitive signage program that supports visitor flow while reinforcing the site’s sense of place and heritage.
