THE ART OF THE ANCIENT GREEK HORSE

The Horse in Ancient Greek Art explores the central role of the horse in ancient Greek culture, examining its appearance in myth, warfare, sport, and competition. Featuring black- and red-figure vases, sculpture, and coins dating from the 8th through the 4th centuries BC, the exhibition reveals how equine imagery conveyed power, status, and storytelling across centuries of Greek artistic production.

Done in collaboration with Madge Bemiss Architects.

Designed as a traveling exhibition, the layout prioritizes close, 360-degree viewing. Freestanding table cases anchor the gallery, with clustered vitrines organizing objects thematically and pillar cases highlighting key works. A cool-toned palette contrasts with the artifacts, while varied graphic scales invite both visual engagement and intimate storytelling. First installed at the Sporting Museum & Library, the exhibition later expanded at VMFA to include hands-on learning tables and a seating area for reflection.
